Rare Antique Ziegler Carpet

19th century
Description

A stunning and rare green antique Ziegler carpet from the famed and world renown Ziegler & Co workshop in Sultanabad, Persia dating from the late 19th century. The all over floral design is beautifully drawn using an elegant combination of rare green colours and floral palmettes surrounded by leaves which made Ziegler carpets so revered and desirable by collectors and designers alike.  The abrash, which is the term for dye change in the main field is really interesting changing from light greens to darker shades of green throughout and amplifies the character of this late 19th Century piece.  The condition is good for this carpet with some areas of old restoration which have been done extremely well to preserve its condition and value.

This 1890 Persian Sultanabad rug is a hand-knotted antique wool and cotton Ziegler carpet in a sage green colourway. The piece displays a central field of large floral palmettes, leaves, and arabesque vine scrolls, all enclosed by a rust red Herati border design. Visible details include distinct abrash dye changes shifting from light greens to darker shades across the field, alongside areas of old restoration. The dimensions are 414 cm high, 305 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Suitable for an English Country House interior scheme, the carpet serves as a floor covering in larger reception rooms, living spaces, or studies. Placed on the floor beneath furniture arrangements, it brings traditional Persian style and texture to a room, grounding the space with its detailed botanical motifs and muted palette.

FAQs

Ziegler carpets were commissioned in the late 19th century by the Manchester-based firm Ziegler & Co. in the Arak region of Persia, created with scaled-up patterns and softer palettes to complement Western domestic interiors.

These carpets feature hand-spun wool pile knotted onto a strong cotton warp and weft, using natural vegetable dyes that age into softened, muted tones over time.

Authentic examples are distinguished by large-scale floral palmettes, wide decorative borders, muted pastel or earthy colour tones, and a supple, finely woven hand-knotted structure.

The understated tones and open botanical layout allow these carpets to anchor minimalist modern furniture, traditional English country schemes, or spaces with dark polished timber.

Vacuum regularly with suction only to avoid damaging the pile, rotate the carpet annually for even light exposure, and rely exclusively on specialist hand-cleaning services.
