Silver Sugar Bowl by Elkington & Co.

19th century
Description

An excellent quality sugar bowl by Elkington &Co. Birmingham England. Hallmarked with a makers mark and date letter for Birmingham 1857 , depicting the young Queens head . The bowl is of fine quality having pierced fretwork and scenes of roman senators, chariots , man on horseback and what appears to be centurions . The glass is frosted and the handle is nicely worked with a platt effect style . The bowl stands on its beautifully detailed feet .

Elkington &Co was founded by George Richard Elkington and his brother , Henry Elkington in the 1830s . A third member joined in 1842 Josiah mason . It operated as Elkington, mason & co until 1861 , then the partnership finished. The firm operated independently as Elkington &co from 1861-1963. It was then taken over by British silverware ltd.

Over the years Elkington received various Royal warrants of appointments with one of their famous pieces in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
