Antique Coquilla Nut Go to Bed

19th century
Description

An early 1800s coquilla nut Go to bed. It has a ring turned top with a turned boss in the centre for the single matsh. A cylindrical body and the base unscrews for storage of matches. Friction would have been obtained from the lid to light the match.

It measures 6cm h x 4cm w.

A match could be placed into a boss in the lid and would give enough light to go to bed hence the name. The were also used for lighting wax sticks for sealing letters. Note this one still has its striking paper to the base of the box.
