Set of Eight Silver Seal Top Spoons, 1965

1940 - 1960
Description

A set of eight silver seal top spoons, replicas of an original 1595 spoon. This set of eight, fully hallmarked London 1965, presented in fitted velvet and silk lined case with information card which reads: The seal-top spoon. A much favoured type in Tudor and early Stuart times. The lobed moulding of the Seal-head is supported by a baluster of acanthus leaves.

While the silver spoon can claim descent from Roman and Anglo Saxon times, it is doubtful whether it was much used in England before the 13th century.

In Medieval times, the possession of even one Silver Spoon conferred distinction on its owner. It was treasured as a talisman, recorded in inventories snd bequeathed in wills.

“Seal-tops” of the character conveyed by these reproductions, are found in Spoons in favour during the reign of Elizabeth. They continued to be made, with modifications, during the Commonwealth period and the early years of the Restoration.

These spoons are in superb condition, apparently unused. They weigh a combined 110 grams.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
