Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware manufactured predominantly around Delft in the Netherlands from the sixteenth century onwards. It is characterised by a white opaque glaze decorated with cobalt blue or polychrome metal oxide pigments, often inspired by imported East Asian ceramics.

Pieces were formed from local clay bodies, fired initially to produce a bisque state, and subsequently dipped into a lead glaze suspended with tin oxide. Cobalt oxide paint was applied directly onto the unfired white glaze before a final high-temperature firing fused the pigments and glaze together.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit a reddish or buff earthenware body visible at unglazed foot rims, small glaze pinholes, and minor edge flaking where the brittle glaze has parted from the earthenware. Decoration shows subtle variations consistent with freehand brushwork rather than modern transfer printing.

Plates can be displayed using wire wall hangers to create a structured gallery wall above a sideboard or console table. Alternatively, securing the piece on a plate stand within built-in shelving or an open bookcase introduces traditional pattern into modern minimalist joinery.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural bristle brush. Avoid immersing the ceramic in water or using chemical detergents, as moisture can penetrate existing glaze crazing or chips and degrade the underlying porous clay body.
