This is colloquially known as a 'bulls eye' or a pontil mark.
The edges were then snapped off to form a square or oblong glass pannel.
The frame of the lantern is constructed of flat c-scroll metal, with some black paint left and a rusty look. This piece has a really good early look to it; probably C1900"
