FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper ingot, then rolling them together under heat and pressure. This technique was widely used in the late 18th and early 19th centuries before electroplating was invented.

These sets are typically constructed from copper fused with sterling silver, often featuring steel blades inside the mechanical snips to ensure a clean cut on candle wicks.

Authenticity is often indicated by the faint yellowish tint of copper showing through where the thin silver layer has worn down at high points or edges, a characteristic known as bleeding, along with maker marks appropriate to the period.

They can be displayed on a coffee table, sideboard, or mantelpiece as a sophisticated metallic accent that brings historical texture and reflective contrast to contemporary spaces.

Clean the metal gently with a specialised silver cloth or mild non-abrasive silver polish, avoiding harsh scrubbing that can wear away the thin silver layer and expose the underlying copper.
