Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Whitby jet mourning jewellery refers to items crafted from fossilised wood gathered along the coast of Yorkshire during the 19th century. Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, Queen Victoria entered deep mourning, establishing black jet as the acceptable material for court etiquette and popular fashion.

Craftsmen hand-carved raw jet blocks using lapidary wheels and knives to create faceted, geometric, or floral patterns on individual beads. The finished beads were then polished with rouge powder before being hand-strung onto silk or cotton cords, often arranged in graduated sizes.

Authentic Whitby jet leaves a chocolate-brown streak when rubbed against unglazed porcelain, feels warm to the touch, and is exceptionally lightweight compared to glass or French jet. It also lacks the mold seams found in vulcanite, gutta-percha, or early plastics.

A black jet bead necklace provides contrast against modern minimalist clothing, such as tailored blazers, crisp white shirts, or dark silk tops. Its matte-to-subtle sheen offers texture without introducing bright colours.

Clean Whitby jet gently using a soft, damp lint-free cloth and avoid chemical cleaners or ultrasonic water baths. Store items individually in padded cloth pouches away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity to prevent surface fractures.
