Tenabrae Easter Candelabra Dated 1682 Brass French Candle Holder Stand Candlestick Antique

17th century
Description

An original, late 17th century sheet brass tenebrae hearse candelabrum, French, dated 1682, on a later hessian-covered stand and base.

Topped by three brass drip-pans, the central pan set with a pricket, the two outer pans with wrapped sockets, inscribed with the words 'IEAN DE BROV' and the date '1682' below,

It is possible that Jean de Brov died in 1682 or, alternatively, that he gifted this to a church in that year.

Brov, originally Brovium, is a small village outside Bourg-en-Bress in Burgundy. The Royal Monastery of Brou was established by Margaret of Austria in the first quarter of the 16th century.

Typical seventeenth century construction, made of good quality front finished cast sheet brass with raised, punched and engraved decoration and inscription. Rolled rivets used throughout for fixings. Original staple bracket mounts.

All in remarkably sound condition with no splitting or perishing. The central drip pan has been re-riveted with an iron rivet, the pan shows no evidence of having been fitted with a candle socket as the other two are, the candle spike possibly sharing the rivet of the mounting bracket, now with old lead solder coverage probably an historic repair to tighten it up. Not recently polished.

Large and striking, Height of brass excluding stand 16,1/2 " or 42cm including stand 20,1/2" or 52 cm

diameter of largest central pan 6, 1/8" or 15.5cm

Width to edge of pans 20,1/2" or 52 cm
