A Superb Early French Silver Drageoir

A lovely and imposing French silver and glass drageoir.

In France, where they originate, they are called ‘Drageoir’ or ‘Confiturier’. The only official name is a ‘Confiturier’ (hence a jam container) and it seems that originally they may have been used as Ceremonial Sugar Bowls and sometimes even for mustard.

The body is urn shaped and of blue glass. It is supported on a solid silver pedestal base with cast detailed supports featuring flowers and leaves.

The twin silver handles are looped and decorated with swan terminals. The hinged cover is finished with a flame terminal and there is a spoon aperture. An outstanding and rare early piece for the collector, with a practical use. Dimensions below.

Condition :- Excellent, with no splits or dents to the silver and no chips or cracks to the glass. The rim has a slight flattening to one area, commensurate with age and use.

Hallmarks :- Marked to the lid and foot.

Date :- c1820.

Height :- 15 cms. (highest point).

Width to outside of handles :- 12 cms.

Base dimensions :- 6 cms. x 6 cms.
