Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Tea Caddy, by Joseph Angell II the Younger, 1866

19th century
Description

A gorgeous Victorian sterling silver tea caddy, by Joseph Angell the Younger (1815-1899)

With lid, lock (but lacking key), the oval panelled body with bright cut engraving, two vacant cartouches, oval beaded finial to the hinged lid, the caddy has a classic beauty, still very much anchored in the Georgian tradition

The firm of Joseph Angell and Son was one of the largest and most important silversmithing and jewellery, manufacturers and retailers in London in the mid 19th century. Having begun as manufacturing silversmiths to the trade, they opened their own retail premises at no.10, The Strand, in 1849. On the retirement of Joseph Angell (senior) in January, 1848, his son, Joseph Angell (junior) continued the family business under his own name, and with his own mark.

Joseph Angell the Younger joined the Society of the Arts in 1850, and in 1851 participated in the Great Exhibition at Crystal Palace with an intricately chased shield, "Alexander and Darius at the Battle of Issus" commissioned by Rundells, subsequently acquired by Her Majesty the Queen.

Angell also included a series of picturesque tea and coffee services and claret jugs of eccentric shapes ornamented either with champlevé enamel and engraved arabesques or applied cast decoration, which won him a Prize Medal.

His firm also exhibited in New York in 1853 and in the International Exhibition in 1862, winning other medals. A claret jug by Joseph Angell II is in the collections of the Victoria and Albert museum.

The tea caddy presented here is hallmarked London, 1866.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
