Large Pair of Superb Quality 19thc Bronze & Gilt Bronze Table Lamps, Signed Barbedienne

A large pair of late 19th century superb quality bronze & gilt bronze table lamps, signed Barbedienne.

This pair of lamps are in the form of antique caryatids after a model of statues in ‘The Carytids Room’ in The Louvre, Paris.

The lamps consist of light fitting to the top with bespoke made shade leading down to a gilt bronze Classical capital leading down to the gilt bronze figure in Classical robes, the figures depicted draped in the finest cloth, a technique known as 'wet cloth'.

The figures are supported by superbly cast patinated bronze and gilt bronze tri-form bases consisting of winged cherubs with trumpets, mythical beast masks, Rococo decoration such as shells, fruit and ribbons with three paw feet, these being supported on tri-form plinths with Greek key pattern decoration.

The bronze figures cast by the famous Parisian foundry F. Barbedienne founded in 1838, and bears their signature and also the Collas reduction stamp, the ornemanist being Louis-Constant Sevin (1821-1888) who worked as an apprentice sculptor in Paris for various sculptors and worked for Barbedienne as a sculptor-ornemanist from the mid 19th century until the end of his life, he produced many works and also won many awards for his sculptures.

The Barbedienne foundry was set up in 1838 by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Achille Collas, Collas invented a machine to create smaller bronze figures from statues of Greek & Roman origin in particular, the foundry producing many fine pieces over the years and worked closely with many artists.

The pair of lamps are in excellent condition for age and are in working order, however we recommend having these checked by a fully qualified electrician prior to use, price includes shades.
