A George III Silver Sweetmeat Basket Circa 1780.

A George III silver sweetmeat basket in the Adam style, of circular form with a twisted swing handle, beaded border over a pierced gallery and stylised floral base on a spreading foot. Engraved with a crest of a figure standing by a wheatsheaf holding a threshing flail, with above a scroll with the motto ‘Sow Thus’(?). Marked to the underside with the lion passant and the maker’s mark of Thomas Phipps.
 
English, London made, circa 1780.
 
Weight 4.46 Troy ounces (139 grammes)
 
Condition: Excellent, with good unspoiled colour. The basket is off an epergne table centrepiece which would have held eight such baskets, hence it only has part marks.
