Victorian Thomas Jones Watson Silver Hip Flask

19th century
Description

This is a mid Victorian hallmarked sterling silver and glass hip flask of diminutive size. It was assayed in London in 1871 and made by Thomas Jones Watson of Goswell Road, London. It bears hallmarks to both the lid and the detachable cup.

The lid has engraved scrolling foliate motifs. It bears a monogram to the top. The lid is quite badly dented. It is too loose to screw properly onto the glass body any more.

The glass body is of typical form with faceted shoulders. There is a chip to the rim of the bottle, and also to a faceted section just above where the cup fits.

The detachable silver cup base has a gilded interior. The exterior is engraved allover with scrolling foliate motifs typical of this period. There is an engraved heraldic symbol to the centre.

Other than the mentioned faults it is is in good order, with wear commensurate with age.

The detachable silver cup weighs 34g / 1.12 ozt.
