Victorian William Comyns Silver Hand Mirror

19th century
Description

This is a late Victorian hallmarked sterling silver hand mirror. It was assayed in London in 1889, and made by William Comyns & Sons. It has allover embossed decoration emanating from an oval to the centre of the back. The front has a similar design to the handle and contains an oval mirrored plate, surrounded by a gadrooned border.

The mirrored plate has a chip to the edge. There appears to have been some restoration to the body, which is particularly noticeable on the side of the frame where the mirror is darker in a demi-lune. Other areas are a slightly different colour to the rest of the body which could indicate repairs or wear.

The mirror is in good, usable condition. Often the backing of the mirror plate has deteriorated, but this hasn't (it may have been replaced). Often they can be a bit wobbly and you can hear pieces moving around inside. That is not the case with this example.
