Circa 1840 Superb Large Old Sheffield Plate Pierced Edge Wine Coasters with Hallmarked Solid Silver Centres, on Pale Turned Wood Bases, Made by James Dixon and Son, Famous Makers.

19th century
Description

Circa 1840 stunning pair of large, heavy and very impressive Old Sheffield Plate magnum sized wine coasters with hallmarked solid silver centres, on pale turned wood bases.

The coasters are gently lobed in shape, with cast pierced edges comprised of beautifully modelled grape vines, leaves, and bunches of grapes. The Sheffield English hallmarked solid silver centres, are mounted on pale coloured turned wood bases, lined with baize on the bottom to protect the table surface.

The centre solid silver hallmarks are complete with assay office, lion passant, Victoria duty mark, and maker, but no date year. James Dixon, the maker, only used this particular mark until 1847. That combined with the young Victoria head, puts the date circa 1840. Dixon and Son is a very good maker.

Size-very generous at 8 inches diameter exterior, and 5 inches diameter interior, by 2.5 inches high.

Weight-1 kilo together.

These lovely coasters will accept up to a magnum sized bottle, and are a stunning example of early Victorian craftsmanship. Usually seen as singles when found, it is excellent to find a pair, making them perfect for the dining table or bar.

In very good condition, they would be wonderful to own, or to give as a gift.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
