Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug with Gymyl Medallion Design, Circa 1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 5ft 6in x 4ft 4in (168 x 131cm).

Antique South East Caucasian Shirvan rug with 'gymyl' design, often known as the dragon motif.

Circa 1900.

The rug is a good example with bold design and striking contrast of colours, the ivory design stands out against the fine field lattice design in indigo blue and madder red. The border design is floral rosettes on a light indigo blue ground. A striking rug of small size.

The rug is in very good condition with slight even wear and good pile. There are old hanging loops attached to the reverse which may account for the excellent condition.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shirvan rugs originate from the South Caucasus region and are characterised by geometric patterns, precise draughtsmanship, and hand-knotted wool construction.

These carpets were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for both the pile and foundation, dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments.

Authentic pieces feature flexible all-wool foundations, fine knot density, regional motifs such as the Gymyl medallion, and subtle colour variations known as abrash.

Position the rug as a grounding element in a room, using its strong geometric forms and deep red tones to contrast against neutral modern furniture.

Vacuum gently without a rotating beater bar, employ a quality rug pad underneath, and arrange professional cleaning through a specialist antique textile conservator.
