Sheffield 1914 Solid Silver Hand Engraved Presentation Trowel with Carved Ivory Handle, by Famous Makers Walker and Hall.

1900 - 1920
Description

Sheffield 1914 English hallmarked solid silver presentation trowel by very famous makers, Walker and Hall, expertly and beautifully hand engraved with unusual and naturalistic design of various cascading leaves, and even a winged insect!

Such trowels were given on important occasions to mark the laying of a foundation stone, or at a "topping out" ceremony, and appropriately inscribed to record the event. Much history can be learned through studying these items, the places they were designed for, and the persons who were honoured with the trowel. This one came from the dedication of a church, St. Joseph's in Cwmaman in Wales, by E. M. Hann, Esq, J.P., of The Oaklands, Aberaman. Trowels are often reused within the building community, with the new engraving being done on the back. Rarely, unengraved antique examples are available.

Size-11 5/8 inches long by 3 inches wide.

Weight-140 grams.

With beautifully shaped and pointed blade, and light coloured carved ivory waisted handle. The aesthetic decoration is very crisp and clear, and the hallmarks are pristine.

In addition to being a beautiful item to display and use for the original purpose, these are now often used as excellent dessert slices by many people. They are very efficient serving pieces for cakes and desserts, and a great historical talking point at the dining table!

A lovely and functional piece of history in very good condition, with one old and stable age hairline to one side of the ivory handle, as often seen on aged ivory. This is a beautiful example.

Please ask about others that may be available, as we always keep some in stock when good examples can be obtained.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
