Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The pedestal desk evolved in eighteenth-century Britain from the earlier knees-hole writing table. Designed to provide ample storage with drawers built into two supporting columns, it became a staple of executive offices, bank boardrooms, and grand library spaces throughout the nineteenth century.

High-grade nineteenth-century pedestal desks typically feature mahogany, walnut, or oak construction, often embellished with flame mahogany veneers. Writing surfaces are commonly lined with gilded leather inserts, and internal drawer linings are usually executed in solid oak or pine with hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic period pedestal desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and timber drawer bottoms with age-appropriate shrinkage. Cabinetmakers such as Gillows of Lancaster frequently stamped drawer edges or lock plates with maker marks or serial numbers.

An antique pedestal desk anchors a dedicated home office or library when paired with contemporary lighting, a modern leather swivel chair, and minimalist art. Placing the desk centrally in a room rather than against a wall highlights its architectural proportions and finished panelling.

Maintain the mahogany woodwork by applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the wood grain. Protect the leather inset with specialised leather cream, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners, and position the desk away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement.
