Antique Georgian Solid Silver Apple Corer 1808

18th century
Description

A wonderful example of an increasingly rare item. This apple corer dates from the reign of George III. It is clearly hallmarked for London 1808, with the maker's mark for Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson.

The turned, green-stained handle is a little loose. The attachments between the silver and handle are present and original but they wobble slightly. It is interesting that the hallmarks on this blade are on the outside, whereas the other corer I have for sale, by the same makers and from a similar period (1797) has the hallmarks on the inside of the blade.

The silver portion is 7.5cm long, and the entire corer, 13cm in length.

Post and packaging are free within the UK. Overseas buyers please e-mail for postage costs and please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Apple corers were personal dining accessories popular during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, designed for individuals to carry and core fruit at the table or whilst travelling.

Georgian apple corers typically feature a sterling silver scoop fitted to a handle crafted from materials such as turned wood, bone, mother-of-pearl, or ivory, occasionally stained in contrasting shades.

Authentic pieces feature British silver hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver scoop, including the duty mark, assay town mark, date letter, and makers mark.

These small silver implements are often displayed inside glass cabinet vitrines, arranged on a tray on a sideboard top, or mounted on custom stands as decorative historic curiosities.

Clean the silver section using a dry microfibre cloth and gentle silver polish, avoiding immersion in water to protect the organic handle material and internal pin attachments from moisture damage.
