A Magnificent Chinoiserie George II Swing Handled Basket Hallmarked London 1757 by Samuel Herbert and Co

18th century
Description

A magnificent Chinoiserie George II swing handled oval basket with applied and cast border. This heavy weight basket is a lovely example. The basket stands on four cast feet with the head and shoulders of a Chinese gentleman on the terminal of each foot. The rim of the basket has a scroll design with a repeat design of a Chinese gentleman's head at each end of the basket. The substantial shaped swing handle again incorporates the Chinese motif and has a central vacant cartouche at the middle of the handle. The sides of the basket have a pierced pattern.

The centre of the interior is engraved with a coat of arms comprising of a right hand grasping a wolf's head crest and the motto 'Virtute et Fortitudine' (By Bravery and Fortitude) which we believe to be the Cooper family coat of arms of Hursely Park Winchester and 26, Grosvenor Square London.

The hallmark is also very clear and is positioned underneath the right handle and shows the makers mark for Samuel Herbert & Co with the date letter for 1757 along with the Lion passant and the crowned Leopard's head.

Condition: The faces to the Chinese gentlemen at the end of the basket are showing some wear where the handle rests. The other head and shoulders are clear and crisp. There are a couple of cracks that can be seen more clearly on the back than the front, please see the last two photographs for the detail of this.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
