Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the 1940s.
The underside of the lid has a pale gold gilt wash and here very clear hallmarks are visible for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1938 and Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling silver, along with the maker's mark for the renowned silversmith: Joseph Gloster Ltd. (Partial hallmarks are also visible on each of the sovereign compartments - see images).

This case is a good heavy gauge of silver.
A very collectable Sovereign case, unusual and rare and in superb antique collector's condition.
