Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Edwardian era.
The lid is hinged and opens and closes perfectly. When opened the clear hallmarks are revealed for the Chester Assay Office with a date mark for 1903 and Lion Passant indicating the finest sterling silver along with the silvermaker's marks: William Neale. There are also partial hallmarks on the lid (see images). There is a good fastening loop to one side.
