Superb Victorian Carved Jet 'Mizpah' Mourning Locket Necklace

A fabulous piece of Mourning Jewellery! In the form of a pendant locket necklace. The pendant itself is a good large size (being 4.3cm x 3.5cm approx). Carved from the most wonderful Whitby Jet, the carving is superb. On one side the pendant bears the words 'MIZPAH' across the centre with lovely curling swirl patterns above and below. The other side is equally attractive carved with a very charming floral design. When opened there are two locket style frames, one side contains an original photograph and the other: several locks of hair. It opens and closes nicely. The loop attached to the jet beaded necklace is covered in silken thread. The jet beads are attached; the first part being ornately whittled beads, these are followed by facetted style beads and next,running up to the fastening at the top, the beads are round. There is a push in fastener at the top.

 

Fabulous and unusual item of Mourning Jewellery or for anyone who collects Victorian Jewellery. The Whitby Jet is superb and the carving exceptional. All in great antique condition.
