George III Scottish Silver Nutmeg Grater

Description

A quality George III Scottish (Edinburgh) cylindrical silver nutmeg grater by Francis Howden. A plain cylindrical form with reeded rims, two hinges and original pierced steel grater. Hallmarked Edinburgh 1818.

In excellent condition, however the hallmarks, notably the assay office are rubbed. The date letter, Georges head and makers marks are present.

Under magnifacation, the two rubbed marks can just be made out to be that of the castle and thistle. Furthermore, the unique shape of the silhouette of George’s head with indentation to the right hand side, confirms it to be Edinburgh. Furthermore, the the maker of Francis Howden only seen in Edinburgh.
