Superb Large Twin Handled Bowl Birmingham 1897

19th century
Description

A superb and very substantial, Victorian, large solid silver bowl. The bowl is beautifully designed with two Grecian style handles either side. The silver body of the bowl is highly polished silver with no engravings or embossing, just a stylish double band around the centre and at the top rim. The deep bowl sits on a splayed pedestal foot, which also features a double banded design around the base rim. Very clear hallmarks are visible on the side of the bowl for the Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1897 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver, with maker's marks for David & Maurice Davis. The underneath of the bowl is also stamped with ' D & M Davis, Silversmiths, Birmingham'.

A very heavy gauge silver bowl of generous proportions.

Condition: The bowl is in lovely antique condition. There are some minor holes on the handles, however, these look like casting holes rather than damage caused with age (please see image 10) and do not detract from the item.

Hallmarks and maker's marks: Birmingham, 1897 by D & M Davis.

Measurements: Height to top of handle: 13 cm approx.

Width at widest part across handles: 24 cm approx.

Diameter width of bowl: 15.5 cm approx.

Weight: 571 grams.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
