Birmimgham 1905 Lovely Large Ceremonial Solid Silver Ivory and Silver Plate Presentation Trowel Made by Thomas Wilkinson and Sons, Very Good Makers.

1900 - 1920
Description

A Birmingham 1905 English hallmarked solid silver and ivory handled gorgeous large ceremonial presentation trowel, having a silver plate engraved blade. This large and heavy piece has an ivory and solid silver handle with a wonderful grain and patina, while the shaped silver plate blade is beautifully and intricately engraved with intertwined vines and leaves among shadows, forming a shaped cartouche for the inscription. Made by Thomas Wilkinson and Sons, very good makers.

It was given on July 4, 1905, to Mrs. F.T. Swinbourne, the wife of the minister, at the opening of the Acocks Green Parish Hall near Birmingham, England. The building was designed by Holland W. Hobbiss, the most important architect in Birmingham, at a time when the population was increasing and more buildings were required.

Such trowels were given on important ceremonial occasions to mark the laying of a foundation stone, or at a "topping out" ceremony, and appropriately inscribed to record the event. Much history can be learned through studying these items.

Size-large at 12.75 inches long by 3.75 inches wide.

Weight-235 grams.

In addition to being a beautiful item to display, these are now used as excellent dessert slices. They are very efficient serving pieces for cakes and desserts, and a great talking point at the dining table!

A lovely and functional piece of history in very good condition, with no cracks or stains to the ivory. This is a very nice example.

Please ask about others that may be available, as we have several solid silver examples being processed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
