Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Hinged on one side the lid opens and closes perfectly and there is a good fastening loop on the side. When the lid is opened clear hallmarks are visible on the inside lip for the Chester Assay Office, with a date mark for 1900 and the Lion Passant indicating sterling silver, along with the silversmith's maker's mark for William Neale.
