Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
The box is hinged on the right-hand side and opens and closes perfectly. When opened it reveals a lovely pale gilded interior. Very clear hallmarks for the Birmingham Assay Office are visible on the inside base, with a date mark for 1900 and Lion Passant indicating sterling silver. The silversmith's maker's marks are also very clear for Gourdel Vales & Company. The Lion Passant and date mark can also be seen on the side of the lid.
