Woodbridge Antiques has dated this piece to the 1930s.
The outside of the case is very nicely engraved with a striking striped design, both front and back (classy and simple). There is a circular empty cartouche in the centre. When opened the case has a lovely lemony gilt finish. The two original navy blue elasticated strips for holding the cigarettes in place are still in tact. Clear hallmarks and maker's marks are visible on the inside for The Birmingham Assay Office with a date mark for 1923. The maker's marks clearly visible are for Alexander Clark Company Ltd.

Remarkably, the original box for holding the cigarette case comes with the case. The box is made from thick brown card and has the silversmith's label on the front with the copy: ' The Alexander Clark Company Ltd. Manufacturing Goldsmiths & Silversmiths, Dressing Case Makers, 125 & 126 Fenchurch Street, London EC. Contractors to the Admiralty, War Office and Colonial Governments. Along with Royal Warrants 'By Royal Command to the Court of Japan' and 'To His Majesty the King of Siam'.
