Antique Silver Spirit Beaker.

19th century
Description

Victorian silver spirit beaker/tot, in the form of a very large thimble. This wonderfully crafted piece is typical of the humour of the times, when folk often used a thimble to measure out a tot of alcohol. This over-size measure is the joke! The beaker is decorated as a thimble and bears the motto "just a thimblefull" in raised letters. Great quality.

London. 1876. Richard Loewe Henry.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silver spirit beaker is a small, unhandled vessel traditionally crafted for drinking spirits such as whisky, gin, or brandy. Novelty designs, including those shaped as oversized thimbles, became popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as conversational drinking pieces.

Spirit beakers were predominantly crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate. Decorative techniques such as engine turning, hand engraving, and die-stamping were frequently applied to create textured grip patterns and detailed lettering.

Authentic pieces generally display hallmark stamps indicating silver purity, city of origin, makers marks, and date letters. Inspecting the sharp definition of engine-turned patterns and cast lettering along the rim also helps verify age and craftsmanship.

A silver spirit beaker can be displayed on a tray alongside vintage decanters on a sideboard, placed on a library bookshelf, or arranged as part of a bar cart setup to add polished metallic texture to a room.

Silver should be gently cleaned using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish to remove oxidisation and tarnish. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners or prolonged immersion in water to protect delicate surface textures and hallmarks.
