Robert Bush Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.

This lovely box has an inscription on the top ‘The Lambkin, St Leger 1884’ and in fact the horse The Lambkin won the St Leger in that year.
It’s not clear if this was a prize for the winning owner, or if it was some other sort of gift or prize or other memento, but it is certainly an item of great historical interest to anyone interested in the history of the St Leger or of horse racing in general.

It is a pretty style having a beaded and patterned edge, the inside of the lid retains the original gilding, and it does have a lock but no key.
It weighs 554 grams and is in lovely original condition.
