Early C19th George IV period bronze and gilt-bronze twin-branch colza lamp.

Classically-inspired design bronze lamp with urn-shaped central reservoir and twin-light arms with their apparently original etched glass globe shades. Well-cast detail throughout with exceptional gilt bronze claw feet. The stem with foliate scroll detail and an applied mask motif .

Colza being rapeseed oil which became a popular fuel choice for lighting during this period, the lamp system having been pioneered and patented in France by Aime Argand in 1780.

Probably made by Thomas Messenger & Sons, Birmingham, though unmarked.

Consistent dark patination with contrasting gilded elements.

Excellent condition, having been adapted for electrical use , and has been professionally re-wired and tested in our workshops. Fitted with traditional style cotton-covered 3-core twisted flex.
