Serpentine Antiques has dated this piece to the 1890s.
A beautiful example of a Victorian solid silver scoop, these were invented to use with a wheel of English stilton cheese, as the curve of the blade would enable a piece to be obtained without crumbling. It will work with any crock or wheel of cheese.
The implement had to be efficient and unable to be easily bent.
The blade is hallmarked solid silver, and the handle is ivory. Unusually, the ivory is in perfect condition, with no discolouration or age cracks. The colour and patina is lovely.
Size-10 inches long by 1 1/8 inches wide.
Weight-95 grams total.
This is a long, stylish, and beautifully crafted cheese scoop in very good condition, which is also a very functional and attractive gift, or a necessity to own yourself. It is an antique which can still be used for its original purpose today. It's simple style will go with any decor, or any pattern.
These scoops are in great demand, and nice long ones in great condition don't come along very often. Most of the ones for sale are much shorter versions.
It is very suitable for giving as a gift with a crock of Stilton cheese and perhaps a beverage of the recipient's choice!
