Set 4 Antique Georgian Sterling Silver Salt Cellars in Case 1797 - Double Duty

18th century
Description

This is a super set of 4 antique Georgian sterling silver salt cellars hallmarked and double head stamped for Sheffield 1797 and clearly marked for the silversmith Thomas Watson & Co.

They come in a presentation box which must have been made for the salts at a later stage, and they also have 4 antique silver spoons in the fitted case.

These spoons are hallmarked Sheffield silver and contemporary but not matching.

In fact 2 date from 1809 and 2 from 1813, and it seems clear that somebody had the box made specifically to house all the items as a set, and it looks great.

The interesting thing about these salts is that they have the King’s head double stamped.

This was done in 1797 when the duty applied to silver was doubled to bring in funds to pay for the Napoleonic wars and the double stamping showed proof that the extra duty had been paid; this was discontinued the following year and so a double stamped silver item from 1797 is a very rare thing.

The salts have a very attractive repousse decoration all round the body and the base and blank cartouches to the sides, and they are a good size being 4” (10 cms) across the top x 2 1/2” (6.5 cms) wide and 2 1/2” high (6.5 cms).

They are in superb original condition with gilded interiors.

The salts and spoons weigh a total of 344 grams.

The box is lined in green velvet which is all in good condition and the inside of the lid is padded silk, again in good condition.

The exterior of the box is perfectly serviceable but suffering from some signs of wear.

Free worldwide fully insured shipping included in the price.
