Description

This is a beautiful pair of antique Irish silver 2 handled cups hallmarked for Dublin 1792 and with the maker’s mark for Christopher Haines who worked in Capel Street, Dublin from 1773 to 1796.

They measure 7 1/2" (19 cms) tall to the top of the handles x 7" (18 cms) across including the handles and they weigh a total of 810 grams (26 troy ounces) and are in excellent original condition.

They both have an engraved crest on each side which are in the same style with floral and ribbon edging, but on one side the actual crest is of a lion and on the other side the crest is of a heron holding a fish.

Both cups are identical in every way with completely matching hallmarks and were obviously made at the same time and they have stayed together for the last 225 years in the same family.

It seems very likely that they were made at the time of a marriage, and the two different crests were of the two families that became joined through the marriage.

Exceptional and very unusual Irish antique silver, excellent condition and particularly attractive.
