Pair of Late 19thc Silver Plate Mounted Art Nouveau Claret Jugs, Stamped Wmf

A pair of late 19th century silver plate mounted Art Nouveau claret jugs, stamped WMF.

This superb pair of claret jugs consist of silver plate mounts to the top forming the collar, handle and hinged lid with repousse metalwork of floral and foliate decoration in the typical Art Nouveau style.

The crystal tapering and cylindrical body of each claret jug is engraved and decorated with scrolling floral and foliate designs. 

The WMF stamp was the mark used by the German company Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik which was set up in Geislingen, Germany in 1853, this company developed their own method for plating and produced excellent results as the coating used was twice as thick as others, this method was patented and is still being used today and remains exclusive to WMF.

This pair of claret jugs are in excellent condition for age and can go straight into a home - ideal for the Christmas table !
