Antique Victorian Sterling Silver 11" Rifle Trophy - 1899 - Cliffe Castle, Keighley

Description

This is a large antique Victorian sterling silver trophy/cup measuring 11" (28 cms) tall x 5 1/4" (13 cms) across the top.

It's hallmarked for Sheffield 1899 with the silversmiths mark for John & Edward Fattorini and underneath is marked 'Fattorini & Sons, Bradford'.

It weighs 595 grams and is in excellent condition with no damage at all and is particularly nice as it sits on three crossed rifles.

One side is engraved 'The Butterfield Cup - 1899'with the Latin motto 'Vis Unita Fortior' which means 'United Strength is Stronger'.

The other side is engraved 'The Butterfield Cup Presented Annually, H.I.Butterfield Esq, Cliffe Castle, To The Keighley Detachment, 3rd Vol.Batt.W.R.Reg. won by Lance Corporal W.Bignall.D.Company'.
