This Victorian French Louis XVI style bonheur du jour desk is formed of warm brown mahogany with brass hardware, glass mirrors, and a white marble top. The upper cabinet contains two mirrored cupboard doors set below a pierced brass gallery rail, complemented by three small drawers with drop ring handles underneath. Below the fold-down writing surface, the piece stands on turned fluted tapered legs decorated with brass insets and neat brass cups, along with ormolu moulding around the main drawer front and sides. Practical dimensions of 111 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 41 cm deep allow this desk to accommodate compact rooms and tight alcoves. Position this writing table against a wall in a study, bedroom, or living room as a decorative workspace. The upper shelving and drawer compartments provide organized storage for stationery and correspondence, while the marble top offers a durable surface for display items. The combination of reflective glass panels, polished metal mounts, and fine fluting brings a touch of classic French chateau styling to contemporary interiors.

A bonheur du jour is a specialised type of small French ladies writing desk featuring a raised cabinet back with drawers or shelves, first developed in Paris during the eighteenth century.

These desks were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or tulipwood, often enhanced with brass or gilt-bronze mounts, marble tops, and glass or mirrored door panels.

Louis XVI style pieces are characterised by rectilinear profiles, straight tapered fluted legs, classical brass mountings, geometric panel moulding, and pierced brass gallery borders.

Due to its compact footprint, a bonheur du jour functions effectively as a laptop desk in a home office, a dressing table in a bedroom, or a decorative side table in a formal reception room.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a natural bees wax polish annually, while avoiding liquid cleaners on the brass mounts and keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
