Sheffield 1932 Wonderful Quality Solid Silver Cutlery Canteen with Lovely Family Crest, Made by James Dixon and Sons, Very Good Makers.

1920 - 1940
Description

Sheffield 1932 English hallmarked solid silver table service canteen of cutlery made by James Dixon and Sons, very good makers.

The service contains 60 pieces including 6 eight piece place settings, plus 12 extra dessert forks. The canteen comprises 6 dinner forks, 18 dessert forks, 6 dessert spoons, 6 soup spoons, 6 fish forks, 6 fish knives, 6 bone handled dinner knives and 6 bone handled dessert knives (knives with stainless blades). Complementary sterling handled knives are available if you prefer, and any additional pieces required can be obtained.

The pattern is a very elegant variant of the Dubarry pattern with a charming family crest on all silver pieces. It has a wheat sheaf with a latin motto within a banner Dominus Providebit, meaning The Lord Will Provide. Our research shows this was a family motto of a Burton family, although other families may have used it as well.

Weight-2730 grams, not including knives.

Size-dinner knife 9 7/8 inches, dessert knife 8 1/8, fish knife 8 inches, dinner fork 7 7/8 inches, dessert fork 7.25 inches, fish fork 6 7/8 inches, soup spoon 7.25 inches, dessert spoon 7 3/8 inches.

It is unusual to get matching fish cutlery with antique silver canteens. It is also very handy to have the extra dessert sized forks to use for additional people or extra courses when entertaining. This greatly extends the capacity of the set by just added extra bone handled knives to work with the forks.

This is a lovely heavy gauged set of cutlery, by a very good maker, in very good condition, and is an excellent value.

The cutlery is stored in protective baize rolls.

This is a prudent investment in the present economy with the climbing value of solid silver, that can also be used and appreciated at the same time.

It makes a lovely wedding gift, sure to be used and loved through the generations.

China shown in the photos is for decoration only, and is not for sale.
