Impressive-scale lantern of flamboyantly carved C17th Venetian style.
Fitted with a cleverly-designed concealed hinged door for access to the lamp.

High-quality gilding with a 'softly' aged patina , with minor areas of 'bleeding' showing the traditionally-prepared red gesso ground base beneath. The 4-panel sides fitted with hand-bevelled glass panes.

The interior refreshed in pale green 'chalky' paint to replicate the original finish .The base with a carved drop pendant finial .
A dramatic and highly-decorative statement for a hall-way, portico or reception room .

In excellent condition with no losses. Complete with short chain , hook and gilt-brass ceiling 'rose' fitting.
Can be re-wired and re-fitted with an internal lamp configuration to client's specification.

The V&A Collection , London , has a similar , though of the period 1570-1600 , Mannerist-style giltwood lantern in its collections .(Museum no. 7225-1860)
