Glasgow 1868 Solid Silver Large Pair of Sugar Tongs, Engraved with Celtic Pattern, by Robert Scott.

Description

Glasgow 1868 very large and heavy pair of Scottish hallmarked solid silver sugar tongs made by Robert Scott, and beautifully engraved in a deep bright cut twisting Celtic pattern, which comes together on the top of the bow to form a cartouche.

These are a typical Scottish style of tongs having a concave bow.

The hallmarks are very clear and are on the underside of the bow.

Weight-45 grams.

Size-6 inches long by .75 inches wide.

This is a heavy gauge of silver, and well suited for its original purpose of serving sugar and also a perfect size for serving ice cubes.

An unusual piece of provincial Scottish silver in very good condition, with excellent spring to the arms and no distortion.

Glasgow silver is scarce and very collectable, as the assay office closed in 1964.
