Birmingham 1908 Pair of Solid Silver Stylish Comports by Gorham.

Description

Birmingham 1908 pair of heavy English hallmarked solid silver comports made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company, quality makers, who in the late 19th century, were the largest silver manufacturers in the world, and known for the quality and artistry of their work. Many White House administrations in the USA commissioned Gorham silver services for their use.

The company had showrooms in London, and a factory in Birmingham. These were likely made in Birmingham to a design produced in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

The comports are also marked with the production codes KA2806 to the inside base underneath. The pattern is called Plymouth, and is illustrated in the 1906 Gorham catalogue. Dinnerware, tea and coffee sets were also produced in this pattern.

The sensuous undulating and ribbed shape with applied ribbon edges with bowl shaped centres are supported by shaped and stepped pedestals.

Given as a gift in Whitefield, Lancashire, and inscribed with the charming 1910 inscription to the original owner, showing the provenance of the pair. A monogram also appears on the opposite edge from the inscription.

These are a lovely pair of comports or dessert stands in very good condition overall.

Considering the value of just the scrap weight of this pair, this is a wonderful value, as silver prices continue to soar.

Size 8.5 inches wide by 4 inches high.
