Carse Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
No initials on the shield.

The top of the piece, the silver has thistle decoration and a cairngorm stone in the middle. The bottom silver part is in the shape of a thistle with a vitrine stone in the middle.
The lid opens perfectly to reveal a fretted and engraved lid which does lift out and looks like the original sponge is inside but I haven't tried to lift it out. The inside of the lid is gilded. The chain is also silver.
This is without any doubt the best vinaigrette I have ever seen, beats the usual rectangular ones hands down. Would have hung on a chain round a ladies neck.
