Unusual Antique Silver Chair Pin Cushion with Coin

Description

This is an unusual antique silver chair pin cushion measuring 3” (7.5 cms) high with the back of the chair an interesting silver coin which is dated 1798 and is a Knights of Malta, Ferdinand von Hompesch Silver 15 Tari Coin which was struck during the short French occupation of Malta.

Ferdinand was born in 1744 and died May 12, 1805 and was the 71st Prince and Grand Master of the Order of Malta, and the first German to be elected to the office.

It is uncertain why the coin has been set in to the back of a chair pin cushion.

Although the coin plainly dates from 1798 the chair itself is unmarked and it must be said that it is unlikely it dates from the same era as the coin and was probably made during the 19th century to hold the coin which was probably an important memento for someone who wanted it to be on display.
