Superb Pair of Victorian Silver Spoons, 1858

Description

An absolutely stunning pair of Victorian silver gilded spoons, hallmarked London 1858 by Stephen Smith & William Nicholson.

Each spoon has the Salters Company coat of arms, and motto 'Sal Sapit Omnia' (salt savours all) on a banner wrapped around the stem. The gilded bowls are of traditional shell design. To the reverse each spoon is dated '12th May 1853'. The 12th May 1853 was the date on which the lease of the Salters Company Irish estate expired. On this date the company assumed full ownership of the estate. The decision to commemorate this important date was not made until 5 years later in 1858 when these spoons were commissioned and presented to members.

These beautiful spoons are complete in their original velvet and silk lined box with the he Salters Company coat of arms and motto on the lid.
