Large Silver Winchester Bushel.

1900 - 1920
Description

Where to start! This is a large example of the famous Winchester Bushel, an iconic piece of silver, as well known as a Warwick Vase or Cellini Ewer, generally only attempted at manufacture by the most accomplished silversmiths. This piece is by Albert E. Jones, no less.

The Winchester Bushel was originally used as a measure of dry capacity (corn, oats etc.) and dates back to the 15th century. At this time Winchester was considered the administrative centre of England. Copies have been produced in silver to commemorate this. The cast motif surrounding the spot-hammered body is in Latin, and translates as "Henry VII, by Grace of God, King of England and France."

This particular bowl was interestingly presented to the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester on their Silver Wedding Anniversary, as engraved on the underside. What more appropriate gift!

This is the largest example we have seen, and is in fine condition; a great addition to any silver collection and a useful and decorative piece.

Birmingham. 1922. Albert E. Jones.

Width (handle tip to handle tip) 20.5cm

Height 9.5cm

Weight 20 troy oz/620gms.

Declaration

George James Antiques has dated this piece to the 1920s.
