Jeff Sims Antiques has dated this piece to the 1800s.
Removal of the propelling pencil allows the case to open, revealing a pink moire interior with a pocket. Presumably the case would have contained a small notepad or leaves of paper, held in place by the central ribbon.

A superb and attractive collector's item, that would also serve well as a card case.
Condition :- Excellent, with no dents or splits to the silver and no tears or splits to the fabric.
Hallmarks :- Marked front and back with French fineness mark and maker's mark.
Date :- c1839 - 1879.
Maker :- EP (separated by a crown and half moon).
Origin :- French.
Height :- 9 cms.
Width :- 6 cms.
