This is a beauty!
It is a solid sterling silver carnet de bal (dance card) with matching silver pencil.
The carnet is in very good condition. The gilt inside the front and back covers is bright and the hallmarks are clear. The hallmark inside the front cover is partial, not having the date letter. The maker''s mark is for George Henry James and the Assay Office mark is for London 1901.
The monogram on the front of the carnet is beautifully picked out in gilt. The back is plain.
The pencil effectively locks the carnet and when it is removed from its two brackets the carnet springs open from the hinge to reveal the notebook.
There are hallmarks on the pencil which are rubbed.
The notebook inside the carnet is almost completely written upon, partly in French and later in English. There is a spare, blank notebook which is easily attached.
