Japanese Carved Dragon Couch C.1900.

1900 - 1920
Description

Truly exceptional Japanese Meiji period carved hardwood couch c.1900. With a fabulous carved scene in high relief to the backrest; around a stylised depiction of the Holy mountain Fuji in clouds flies an enormous scaly dragon with vicious claws. Topped on either side with extraordinay dragon-headed fish. Further carved dragons form the armrests whilst the legs and bottom rail are carved to represent water with three swimming carp (symbols of youth, bravery, perseverance, and strength in Japanese folklore). Fantastic original condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops. The seat is formed of three loose pads which would be simple to recover.

Dimensions: width 72", depth 28", height 48".
